Before becoming renowned as the master of suspense in the 1940s and '50s, Alfred Hitchcock was a reliable workhorse for the British film industry, as evidenced in this selection of early works rescued from public domain oblivion and presented remastered by Lionsgate.  The Ring, a 1927 silent film, features Hitch's only solo writing credit, and its juxtaposition of marriage with boxing through the visual pun of the ring exhibits the filmmaker's visual imagination and storytelling savvy.  Sadly, the same cannot be said about the melodramatic The Manxman, the staid adaptation of The Skin Game, or the strangely structured narrative of Rich and Strange.  While each showcases elements that will become Hitchcock hallmarks, they are merely preludes to the more striking films to come.  The highlight of the set is undoubtedly 1930's Murder!, in which acclaimed actor Sir John Menier (Herbert Marshall) deploys the craft of acting to uncover a murderer in a story worthy of any of the great British mystery novelists dominating the literature of the decade.  A documentary exploring Hitchcock's early career is the only supplement.
