Star-Crossed is Just the Start...

Beauty and the Beast: The First Season

Virginia Aldridge, Don Balluck, B.F. Barnett, Cynthia Benjamin, Robin Bernheim, Mark Cassutt, Michael Cassutt, James Crocker, Alex Gansa, Howard Gordon, Ron Koslow, Andrew Laskos, George R.R. Martin, David Peckinpah, Ron Perlman, Richard Stowe
Created by Ron Koslow

Co-opting elements of the well-known fairy tale and placing them in a modern context, Ron Koslow's Beauty and the Beast (not to be confused with Jean Cocteau's or Disney's interpretation) is powered by the star-crossed love of its title characters and makes the problems of Romeo and Juliet seem trivial by comparison. After being assaulted and left for dead in Central Park, attorney Catherine Chandler (Linda Hamilton) is rescued by the leonine Vincent (Ron Perlman) and introduced to his secret world of outcasts beneath the city. Though many of the storylines are clichés of genre television—vigilantes disguising themselves as the Vincent, scientists
capturing and experimenting on the beast man, etc.—the strength of the show rests in the characterizations of its two leads, and their romantic tension serves as an impressive engine for the season. No extras are included, though Paramount deserves special recognition for fitting six single-sided discs into a case no larger than those employed for solo film releases.
