I was writing about shorts in my latest Agents' Hot Sheet column for Creative Screenwriting, and The Gersh Agency's Richard Arlook commented on how pervasive shorts are nowadays—easy to make, easy to get them out there. That very day, out of nowhere, Toofy Shorts, Vol. 1 arrived in the mail. Uncanny. Compiled by Boulder, Colorado's Toofy Film Fest, this collection of 11 award-winning indie shorts from around the world is about half live action and half animation. The creativity in the animated selections is astonishing. Gaelle Denis' City Paradise is mind-blowing mix of live action, 2D, and 3D animation. And Chris Harding's hilariously on-target political satire Learn Self-Defense should be required viewing in D.C. But it's in the live-action that Toofy Shorts, Vol. 1 really shines. David May's doggone funny Fetch demonstrates what happens when you mix a rowdy dog, ice fishing, a Jeep and dynamite, and Jamin Winans' outstanding Spin, about a mysterious DJ who can turn back time with his turntables, may well be the best short film I have ever seen, period. No wonder it was the official selection at over 60 festivals. As one might expect from a compilation, some entries are stronger than others. But overall, Toofy Shorts, Vol. 1 is a terrific collection that really brings the talent.
