The State Within

Lizzie Mickery and Daniel Percival

The politics of terror take center stage in this BBC/BBC America co-production that eyes post-9/11 America with a healthy dose of British skepticism. When a terrorist bombing destroys a UK-bound airplane over Washington D.C., British Ambassador Sir Mark Brydon (Jason Isaacs) uncovers a conspiracy designed to draw the U.S. into a war. Juxtaposing the worldwide political ramifications of the conspiracy with the personal toll it takes on Brydon's personal life, The State Within offers up suspenseful action tempered by a broader world view—a more thoughtful 24 where the Jack Bauer notion of shoot first and ask questions later is replaced with a political savvy that must consider the fallout from every revelation and accusation. The result is a complex story that almost insists on a second viewing to appreciate its complexity. A short behind-the-scenes featurette chronicles the six-episode series' creation with a few thoughtful insights from the writers.
