Casanova (2005)

Jeffrey Hatcher and Kimberley Simi
Story by Kimberley Simi and Michael Christofer

With a knowing wink at the stock characters of the Commedia dell'arte and drawing room farces of the era, Touchstone's movie Casanova (not to be confused with the BBC TV series of the same year) tackles the escapades of history's most famous lover with a wealth archetypal characterizations and more mistaken identities than several years worth of daytime soap operas. Urged by the Doge (Tim McInnerny) to seek a wife lest his boundless faculty for sexual scandals end in exile, the Venetian adventurer Giacomo Casanova (Heath Ledger) sets out to marry, but quickly falls for an unattainable feminist (Sienna Miller) while evading the clutches of a ruthless Bishop of the Holy Inquisition (Jeremy Irons). Weaving philosophical debates on the nature of love with bawdy comedy and rampant action, Casanova brings to life a ready-made cinematic figure with charm and a story that borrows from popular dramas of the era to create a modern entertainment with renaissance flare alongside an abundance of double entendre. A handful of featurettes and director's commentary offer minimal insights into the story's development.
