Even in the eighth season, Cheers not only continued its tradition of excellent storylines, great characters, and remarkably witty dialogue, it actually surpassed some of its earlier years in quality.  It’s amazing that this late in the series, the gang of friends who all but live at the tavern in Boston didn’t grow tiresome.  The laugh-out-loud episodes like Cliff’s (John Ratzenberger) appearance on Jeopardy and “Cry Hard,” where the gang visits Rebecca’s (Kirstie Alley) boyfriend’s apartment are not so much exceptional as they are par for the series’ course.  Couple this with the fact that the show never slipped into pat stupidity (as most sitcoms have a tendency to do in their early seasons, much less their eighth), and it’s easy to see why Cheers is such a model of the medium.  Paramount has neglected to include any extras on this much-deserving set, which seems to have become custom with their classic sitcoms.
