Art School Confidential
Daniel Clowes

Writer Daniel Clowes reunites with director Terry Zwigoff to tell a semi-autobiographical tale of his disappointing tenure in art school. Accepted to New York City's prestigious Strathmore Institute, art student Jerome Platz (Max Minghella) quickly discovers that talent is not all its cracked up to be in a quirky world of hypocritical teachers, obtuse students, and fickle critics. Art School Confidential is filled with the same breed of quirky characters that inhabited the filmmakers' previous collaboration Ghost World, but Confidential is less episodic than that film, following Jerome's pursuit of artistic respect and paralleling that tale with his attempt to woo a beautiful model (Sophia Myles). The story's genre-bending turn courtesy of the mysterious "Strathmore Strangler" is an inspired move, juxtaposing moral relativism with the theme of aesthetic mercenariness that pervades in class where the works off artless hack Jonah (Matt Keeslar) are hailed as genius while Jerome's own craftsmanship is ignored. An engaging feature relates the story to Clowes' life, while a small selection of intriguing deleted scenes flesh out the story. A commentary from Clowes and Zwigoff would have been appreciated, but nary a word is heard.
