The Chronicles of Riddick (Unrated Director's Cut)

David Twohy (also directed)

The Chronicles of Riddick takes its title character (Vin Diesel), the anti-hero from the innovative and engaging Pitch Black (also written & directed by Twohy), and drops him into a world that looks like a collage of every other science fiction movie ever made. That the viewer may have difficulty recalling the story -- Riddick, the chosen one, must stop an army of religious fanatics bent on galactic domination -- or, indeed distinguishing it from any other genre story, is a credit to the filmmaker's breadth of inspiration and lack of originality. This director's cut offers more story via awkwardly re-inserted scenes that jar the viewer, thus sticking out like sore thumbs.
