End of the Road... and What a Road It Was
by JASON DAVIS

Buffy the Vampire Slayer: The Complete Seventh Season

Joss Whedon, Douglas Petrie, Jane Espenson, Rebecca Rand Kirshner, Drew Goddard, Drew Z. Greenberg, David Fury, and Marti Noxon
Created by Joss Whedon

"In every generation there is a Chosen One. She alone will stand against the vampires, the demons, and the forces of darkness. She is the Slayer." With those words, Buffy the Vampire Slayer arrived on the fledgling WB network's 1997 mid-season schedule. And it is to those words that creator Joss Whedon returns for the series' final season, which examines what it means in our society to be a woman with power. As the First (the original source of evil) prepares to end the lineage of Slayers, Buffy and friends must look within themselves for the courage to face an elemental force of the universe that cannot be defeated. By returning to the high school where everything began, Whedon's writers bring the story full circle. Every character gets at least one episode in which to shine, and the series is given a truly satisfying finale. Unfortunately, the end of the series somewhat sabotages the supplemental material as the writers, directors, and actors participating in the commentaries seem to have detached emotionally from the show and spend more time recalling amusing memories than speaking of the work. The only exception is Whedon, who ably analyzes the series finale.
