Spun off from martial law series JAG, NCIS focuses on the civilian investigative arm of the United States Navy as they employ state-of-the-art forensics in the pursuit of military justice.  Combining the character-lead heart of the parent series with the procedural bent of shows like CSI, NCIS offers the best of both worlds to viewers with a passion for investigative minutiae and ongoing story arcs populated by engaging characters.  With season two, co-creator Donald P. Bellisario refined the format presented in the first year with an increased emphasis on humor and a de-emphasis of the show's military angle, successfully creating a more accessible series that can be appreciated story by story while offering the bonus of evolving characters for regular viewers.  From biological terrorism through the U.S. mail to murdered ROTC officers, intricately plotted investigations afford Special Agent Jethro Gibbs (Mark Harmon) and his team ample opportunity for bickering and brilliance as the volatile mix of personalities established over the first 22 episodes gel into a family just in time for a heart-stopping season finale, where terrorist Ari Haswari (Rudolph Martin) takes aim at one of the team.  A selection of featurettes skims the surface of the series, offering a few worthwhile insights on the real Naval Criminal Investigation Service.
