Inspired by the life of forensic anthropologist and author Kathy Reichs

Following Fox's success with character-based procedurals like House, M.D., Bones dramatizes the work of forensic anthropologist/novelist Kathy Reichs as her TV counterpart Dr. Temperance "Bones" Brennan (Emily Deschanel) uses her obscure breed of science to reconstruct stories from human remains. Paired with Special Agent Seeley Booth (David Boreanaz), Dr. Brennan helps the FBI investigate unsolved murders in a partnership reminiscent of the Mulder-Scully relationship from The X-Files. The emotionally repressed Brennan seizes on facts, while Booth follows a more instinctual method of investigation, creating a stylistic tension between the characters, which is underlined by a subtle sexual attraction. The key to the format's success is Brennan's empathy with the bones she analyzes and her capacity to understand the victim's story, effectively solving an A story crime while telling a discreet B story about a character who died before the episode began. Creator Hart Hanson is joined by executive producer Barry Josephson on a pilot commentary that sadly only skims the surface of the show's development in favor of dwelling on matters of production. A segment featuring interviews with Kathy Reichs offers a little more background on the series, while another short subject examines the science behind the stories.
