A Film With No New Moves
by peter clines
Step Up
Duane Adler and Melissa Rosenberg
Story by Duane Adler

Inner city club kid, vandal, and part-time car thief Tyler (Channing Tatum) serves out his public service as the stand-in dance partner for Nora (Jenna Dewan), a promising young upper-class ballerina at the local School for the Arts. Take one part My Fair Lady, two parts Fame, sprinkle heavily with West Side Story, and marinate with countless music videos. Then strain out anything original that might have accidentally formed in the mix. The script by Duane Adler (Save the Last Dance) and Melissa Rosenberg (Birds of Prey) isn’t poisonous, granted, but its complete lack of distinct flavor and bland consistency will churn all but the strongest stomach. There are several bonus features, but all are concerned far more with the dancing than the recycled story.

Peter Clines has had a lifelong love affair with the movies. He grew up in New England, where he studied English literature and education, and now lives and writes somewhere in Southern California. If anyone knows exactly where, he would appreciate a few hints.
