The Brown Bunny

Vincent Gallo
(Also star, director of photography, editor, producer, and director)

The Brown Bunny details the cross-country journey of motocross racer Bud Clay (Gallo) who's in the throws of a deep depression resulting from his break-up with Daisy (Chloë Sevigny), the love of his life. Luckily, the DVD jacket copy is provided to illuminate the plot, as the film endeavors to avoid it with epic stretches of Bud driving down the interstate interspersed with brief encounters that define "inarticulate" while nanometering the story along. By the time Bud reaches Los Angeles, and the climax of the film, the numbing effect of the first seventy minutes, combined with the apathy generated by Bud himself, renders what is supposed to be a cathartic revelation merely a relief from the interminable narcissism of the film's auteur. Though the film succeeds on some subconscious level as a mood piece, its story would have been hard-pressed to invigorate a fifteen-minute short film. The best writing here is songwriter Gordon Lightfoot's "Beautiful" -- unfortunately, this isn't a music video.
