A Childhood Classic,
But Not
Enough Story to Fill a Glass Slipper
by scott castle

Cinderella (Two-disc Special Edition)

William Peet, Erdman Penner, Ted Sears, Winston Hibler, Homer Brightman, Harry Reeves, Kenneth Anderson, Joe Rinaldi
From the original classic by Charles Perrault

You know the story: enslaved by her stepmother after the death of her father, Cinderella works night and day to serve her wicked guardian and two vile stepsisters, only to have a royal invitation and magical intervention offer her an opportunity to become something more than a scullery maid. But you may have been too small when you first saw this Disney classic to notice how thin the actual story is, and how the writers pad out Cinderella's running time with the exploits of Cindy's "pet" mice trying to confound the household cat. While entertaining, these antics could have made way for more character development, particularly the cardboard prince, and further complications to the story. Deleted scenes and a making-of feature offer insight into the development of Disney's animated features.
