Shallow
By Danny munso

Aquamarine
John Quaintance and Jessica Bendinger
Based on the novel by Alice Hoffman

Following in the fin-steps of cinematic hallmarks like Splash and even The Little Mermaid, Aquamarine is your basic boy-meets-teenage mermaid story, with the only modern twists coming in the form of Blackberrys and Teen Cosmo. This is a film that could only please teenage girls, and maybe not even them. When BFF's* Claire (Emma Roberts) and Hailey (Joanna "Jojo" Levesque) discover sprightly mermaid Aquamarine (Sara Paxton) in their beach club pool, insanity ensues -- which, obviously, involves all three of them falling for hunky Raymond (Jake McDorman) and Aquamarine trying to convince her overbearing dad that she can fall in love in three days. While the film has its share of humorous moments and accurately portrays teenage friendship, it's a shame Roberts and Paxton didn't get the same material they regularly revel in on their "tween" television shows. Skip this, and try and catch Unfabulous or Darcy's Wild Life instead.
* For the uninitiated, this is teen-speak for "best friends forever".
