The Devil Wears Prada
Aline Brosh McKenna
Based on the novel by Lauren Weisberger

One of the more amazing things about The Devil Wears Prada is that, despite the Fox marketing department's best efforts, you can be a man who could care less about Jimmy Choos and Manolo Blahniks and still find yourself caring deeply about these rich and very funny characters. Based on Lauren Weisberger's 2003 roman à clef, The Devil Wears Prada follows struggling journalist Andy Sachs (Anne Hathaway) as she becomes an assistant to the famous (and vicious) Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep), editor-in-chief of fashion's most vital publication, Runway. The film's plot is, at its most basic, nothing more than the usual rags-to-riches fairy tale told through the world of fashion, but screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna keeps the humor strong enough to overcome any clichés the film may parade. While much of the film's wit comes at the expense of poor Andy -- who we're told is fat (she's a size 6) and has no sense of style whatsoever -- Brosh McKenna manages to ride this one-trick pony most of the way to the finish line with lots of laughs. The second act drags a bit before real drama is thrown Andy's way, but picks up quickly enough to avoid any annoying pacing issues. Hopefully, even with The Man of Steel returning this weekend, this smart, sharp, hilarious comedy finds an audience (of men and women) at the box office.

Danny Munso graduated from film school in 2004 and can currently be found on his computer working on one of his many half-written screenplays. Or, more likely, he's on the Internet checking the scores of his beloved Bay Area sports teams.
