Head of the Class

Brothers of the Head

Screenplay by Tony Grisoni
Based on the novel by Brian Aldiss

Blending fact and fiction has never been so skillfully done as it is in Brothers of the Head, a rock and roll mockumentary that refuses to constrain itself to the formulas of a filmmaking style that's usually employed in a comedic way. Screenwriter Tony Grisoni (Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas) and co-directors Keith Fulton and Louis Pepe (Lost in La Mancha) never want you to know that this adaptation of Brian Aldiss' novel isn't real. Set in the early '70s, Brothers follows conjoined twins Tom and Barry Howe (Harry and Luke Treadaway, real life twins who are not conjoined) as they form the punk band The Bang-Bang. The brothers are constantly hounded by Eddie Pasqua (Tom Bower), a filmmaker commissioned to follow the boys from rags to nicer rags, as they make their way from novelty freak act to an accomplished punk outfit before Tom and Barry begin to hate sharing the spotlight with the other. The film walks a delicate line between the completely absurd and the frightfully dramatic, meshing classic rock-doc scenes of raucous shows and intimate songwriting sessions with a tragic, almost voyeuristic portrayal of two brothers who cannot be individuals and are forced to live their entire lives attached to the other. It is a line that Grisoni, Fulton, and Pepe tow perfectly, for Brothers of the Head keeps you so entertained that when the film's stunning conclusion hits, it's hard to separate this fictional work from the real emotions it releases.
