A Terrific, Radiant, Humble Film

By peter clines

Charlotte's Web (2006)

Susannah Grant and Karey Kirkpatrick
Based on the novel by E.B. White

In an amazingly faithful adaptation of the classic children's story, Wilbur the pig (voiced by Dominic Scott Kay) may be doomed for the smokehouse unless the clever web-spinning of barn spider Charlotte A. Cavittica (v. Julia Roberts) and a few choice words from Templeton the rat (v. Steve Buscemi) can change the farmer's mind. While Charlotte's Web may not pack the action of The Incredibles or the non-stop laughs of Over The Hedge, this live-action film is still a powerful tale of friendship and love for viewers of all ages. Susannah Grant (Erin Brockovich) and Karey Kirkpatrick (The Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy) do an amazing job of bringing the children's favorite of over half a century to the screen, and their few alterations are so subtle and well matched to E.B. White's original story that even the biggest fans will have trouble spotting the additions and absences.

Peter Clines has had a lifelong love affair with the movies. He grew up in New England, where he studied English literature and education, and now lives and writes somewhere in Southern California. If anyone knows exactly where, he would appreciate a few hints.
