Borrowing the class-transcending romance of Lady and the Tramp and re-furring it with a feline coat, The Aristocats finds well-to-do city cat Duchess (voiced by Eva Gabor) and her three kittens abandoned in the country by a jealous butler (v. Roddy Maude-Roxby) desperate to usurp the felines' inheritance from their wealthy owner (v. Hermione Baddeley). Along the way, the high-class cats are befriended by the roguish alley cat Thomas O'Malley (v. Phil Harris) and a host of other colorful anthropomorphic animals as they make their way back to civilization. A strong spine drives the narrative, in contrast to Walt Disney's more episodic Jungle Book, which preceded it. Though the story bears superficial resemblances to Lady and the Tramp, as well as 101 Dalmatians, it stands on its own as a triumph of characterization and simple, yet effective, storytelling. The minimal supplements focus on the Sherman brothers' music, including one deleted song.
