Romancing the Outlaws

by jason Davis

Bonnie and Clyde (Two-Disc Special Edition)

David Newman & Robert Benton

Writers David Newman and Robert Benton redefine the meet-cute when waitress Bonnie Parker (Faye Dunaway) catches ex-con Clyde Barrow (Warren Beatty) eyeing her mother's automobile with felonious intent. The ensuing romance/crime spree that finds Bonnie and Clyde robbing banks in five southern states during the early years of the Great Depression quickly takes on a Robin Hood quality, with the outlaw protagonists sticking it to the stinking money men who foreclose on poor farmers. The lawmen out to catch the Barrow gang become the bad guys as Bonnie and Clyde are feted as folk heroes and eventually legends before their inevitable betrayal and demise. DVD producer Laurent Bouzereau offers a complete overview of the film's development, production, and reception in a detailed documentary where Benton reveals that Clyde was originally scripted as bisexual and why director Arthur Penn suggested a change to the characterization. Analysis of the movie is complemented with a History Channel feature on the real Bonnie and Clyde that highlights the differences between the seedy fact and the romantic fiction.
