Army Wives: The Complete First Season

Katherine Fugate, Hilly Hicks, Jr., Dee Johnson, Amanda Lasher, Jeff Melvoin, Michael Oates Palmer, Julie Rottenberg, Rama Stagner, Bruce Zimmerman and Elisa Zuritsky

Created by Katherine Fugate

Based on the book Under the Sabers: The Unwritten Code of Military Marriage by Tanya Biank

Inspired by Tanya’s Biank’s book Under the Sabers, Army Wives examines a life in the service from the perspective of five Army spouses.  Katherine Fugate’s pilot elegantly introduces the viewer to the different strata of army life through the eyes of Claudia Joy Holden (Kim Delaney), a colonel’s wife who must navigate the backstabbing politics on post down to Roxy LeBlanc (Sally Pressman), the new wife of an enlisted man struggling to adapt to her new existence in the military.  Fugate places her five principal characters on a collision course that finds them forging a bond by pilot’s end and relying on one another during the trials and tribulations of the ensuing episodes.  The variety of characters allows for several varying perspectives on military life and, much like Desperate Housewives, each of the cast members takes center stage in her (or in the case of Sterling K. Brown’s army husband Roland Burton, his) own narrative, which is carefully integrated into the ongoing development of the characters’ evolving friendship.  Fugate and her collaborators provide commentaries on several episodes and offer insights into the show’s evolution from Biank’s book.  Deleted scenes and a handful of featurettes explore a show that highlights the home front of a world at war.
