Hex: The Complete First Season

Julian Jones, Jake Michie, Peter Tabern, and Lucy Watkins
Created by Julian Jones and Lucy Watkin

Marketed as "the British Buffy," Hex misses the heart with the Vampire Slayer's stake. Set in an English boarding school, the series chronicles Cassie Hughes' (Christina Cole) discovery of her accursed heritage as the last in a line of witches with psychic abilities. The first six episodes collected in this release form the original British first season, which offered mood and mystery over any real narrative meat as the directionless Cassie wandered through an ill-defined mythology with only the antics of her dead lesbian roommate’s ghost (Jemima Rooper) to make the proceedings bearable. The first four episodes of season two (included due to BBC America's arcane scheduling) feature the introduction of 445-year-old demon hunter Ella Dee (Laura Pyper), who provides a much better series anchor and lets the series firm up its backstory and develops into something more interesting. A selection of deleted scenes offer only one gem with the aforementioned ghost, while a making-of-season-two featurette spills the beans on as-yet unreleased later episodes.
