The exploits of newly minted attending physician John "J.D." Dorian (Zach Braff) continue to punch the funny bone even while they pull the heart strings as Scrubs gurney surfs into its fifth season. While J.D. takes on his own crew of interns, his mentor Perry Cox (John C. McGinley) suffers the greatest setback of his medical career in a three-episode arc that showcases the series' extraordinary range of tones. Creator Bill Lawrence and his writers have matured along with their characters, and the assuredness with which the series mingles comedy and tragedy is a testament to their skill. As always, a selection of alternate takes showcase the on-set improvisation encouraged of Lawrence's cast and crew, while a director's cut of the Braff-directed 100th episode ("My Way Home") offers insight into the editorial process that resulted in the aired version. Actors and producers are on hand for commentary, but your best bet for learning more from Bill Lawrence is in the January/February 2007 (Dreamgirls) issue of Creative Screenwriting where I talked to him in depth about his work on the show.
