The Outer Limits: Season 1, Volume 1

Written by Allan Balter, Robert Mintz, Meyer Dolinsky, Jerome Ross, Ellis St. Joseph, Anthony Lawrence, David Duncan, Louis Charbonneau, Orin Borsten, Dean Riesner, Bill S. Ballinger, and Lou Moheim

“We are controlling transmission. We control the horizontal. We control the vertical...” These words marked every appearance of The Outer Limits, an anthologized world of scientific experiments, alien visitors, and usually some very dark moral and ethical decisions which was the brainchild of the late James Stefano (Psycho) and Leslie Stevens (Buck Rogers in the 25th Century). This box set contains half of the show’s first season including such famous and thought-provoking episodes as the bug-eyed alien thriller “The Zanti Misfits,” and a very young Ed Asner fighting a mysterious creature of raw energy (praised by Stephen King as one of his favorite monsters) in “It Came Out of the Woodwork”. The dialogue and science scream of the '60s, and some of the subtle points may be lost without the “recent” Korean War in mind, but it’s still easy to see how these sharp, ground-breaking stories inspired a generation of writers when they aired, and continued to as they went into syndication. Considering the high bar The Outer Limits set for the shows that followed, it’s unfortunate that these DVDs don’t have a single special feature (not even a "Play All" option).

Peter Clines has had a lifelong love affair with the movies. He grew up in New England, where he studied English literature and education, and now lives and writes somewhere in Southern California. If anyone knows exactly where, he would appreciate a few hints.
