Lovejoy: The Complete Season One

David Brown, Terry Hodgkinson, Ian La Frenais, Franics Megahy, and Murray Smith

Based on the novels of Jonathan Gash, Lovejoy chronicles the adventures of roguish antiques dealer Lovejoy (Ian McShane) as he pursues valuables and inadvertently stumbles into mysteries.  Developed for television by Ian La Frenais (Goal!), the series downplays the darker tone of Gash's books but still treads the fine line between drama and comedy, with the lecherous Lovejoy never passing up a lovely lady unless there's a worthy antique to pursue in her place.  The TV series adds Eric Catchpole (Chris Jury), an apprentice to whom Lovejoy can explain his specialized trade (for the viewers' benefit), and Lady Jane Felsham (Phyllis Logan), a refined woman to provoke some class-conscious will they/won't they tension.  An interview with McShane is the only extra, but the star is remarkably articulate regarding his discovery of the novels, their subsequent dramatization, and how stories were crafted and executed to bring out the best of the literature on the screen.
