Cracker: A New Terror

Jimmy McGovern

After a 10-year absence from television screens, writer Jimmy McGovern's cantankerous police psychologist Eddie "Fitz" Fitzgerald (Robbie Coltrane) returns to the screen in a feature-length story shrouded in post-9/11 ennui and darkly critical of the paranoid society that has arisen in its wake.  In the UK for his daughter's wedding, Fitz finds himself investigating the murders of several Americans in Manchester and delving into the mind of a killer twisted by the war on terror.  McGovern's script, punctuated by sound bites from Bush, Blair, and various war correspondents, immerses itself in the cultural zeitgeist and offers a sympathetic insight to the killer's motivations even as Fitz closes in for the arrest.  A one-hour documentary chronicling the creation of Cracker features in-depth interviews with McGovern and others involved in the series.  The creator recalls how he came to develop the series, the writing of several key episodes, and how best to deal with actors who've decided to move on from the series.
