Hurled into the future by a demon (voiced by Mako), the lone samurai warrior known only as Jack (v. Phil LaMarr) has to survive in a twisted world that’s part sci-fi and part sorcery until he can return to the past, kill the demon, and put history back on track.  This DVD set contains all 13 episodes of Samurai Jack's fourth season, and stands well above most material aimed at kids.  The scripts are fine examples of visual storytelling that blend the long silences of a Kurasowa film with the occasional absurdity of Sam Raimi.  Some of the more interesting ones include a Sin City-like tale of a noir robot (the most dialogue-intensive episode in the collection); a quartet of short stories based on the four seasons; and the two-part epic “The Scotsman Saves Jack,” which may hold some sort of record for the most Star Wars references.  The special features are a bit thin, but “Genndy’s Roundtable” brings together creator Genndy Tartakovsky (Dexter’s Laboratory) with several writers, storyboarders, and character designers to discuss the origins of the show and also the development of the visuals, tone, and story arc for the series.

Peter Clines has had a lifelong love affair with the movies. He grew up in New England, where he studied English literature and education, and now lives and writes somewhere in Southern California. If anyone knows exactly where, he would appreciate a few hints.
