By now, the CSI shows (which include the original series, Miami, and New York) have become more of a machine than a TV show franchise. The episodes all follow a basic formula and dazzle their audiences with colorful frames and inventive computer graphics (a stylized pullback from bullet fragments inside a fractured skull never gets old), but its mechanics are beginning to creak. CSI: Miami’s fifth season follows the exploits of a forensic investigative team led by Horatio Caine (David Caruso). And following in true CSI tradition, the episodes find their protagonists investigating everything from celebrities to male models to allegedly murderous black bears, all replete with misdirects and Caine’s signature dry puns. The problem the series currently faces is how to keep its audience on their toes. There’s only so many ways to execute a red herring in a whodunit, and between the three CSI series, it seems as though every method has been tried and retried (and retried again). Consequently, the episodes tend to fall into a state of predictability even when they’re going out of their way to seem fresh and surprising. The featurettes and commentaries are focused primarily on the production and acting elements of the show and pay little attention to the writing process.
