Braveheart (Special Collector’s Edition)

Randall Wallace

Launching director Mel Gibson’s passion for movie martyrdom, Braveheart is a highly romanticized epic casting 13th-century Scottish patriot William Wallace (Gibson) as a Christ figure complete with his own Judas.  Favoring drama over historical accuracy, Randall Wallace’s script mingles a star-crossed love story with epic battles and imbues all three hours with a noble sense of purpose as Wallace and his squabbling Scots face off against King Edward I (Patrick McGoohan) for the freedom of their nation.  Elegantly layered politics bring a sense of verisimilitude to the proceedings, and the Scots’ heir apparent, Robert the Bruce (Angus Macfadyen), navigates a story arc no less satisfying than that of the film’s protagonist, providing a noble foil to Wallace’s exploits.   Extensive supplements highlight the few available facts surrounding the historical Wallace, as well as the screenwriter’s process for developing the script and his justifications for many of the movie’s dramatic liberties.
