The Big Kahuna of CGI Animal Films

Surf's Up
Story by Christopher Jenkins and Christopher Darren
Screenplay by Don Rhymer and Ash Brannon & Chris Buck & Christopher Jenkins
It's amazing and inspiring that after countless penguin movies, documentary movies, and animated animal movies, Surf's Up somehow manages to combine all of these elements into a fresh, strong, and entertaining film. A film crew documents the rise of Cody (voiced by Shia LeBeouf), a penguin who finally gets a shot at his dream, surfing in a major competition like his childhood idol, Big Z, used to. However, with the help of his new best friend (v. Jon Heder), a beautiful life guard (v. Zooey Deschanel), and an old beach bum (v. Jeff Bridges), Cody comes to realize that if you want to succeed, you've got to love what you do more than you love winning. The documentary aspect is used to great effect with constant camera angles and interviews that let characters spew out "unscripted" exposition, advancing character development without feeling forced. Like some of the best classic animation, the screenplay also targets both adults and children with multi-layered humor and morals. While it certainly isn't in the same league as Endless Summer or Step Into Liquid, it wouldn't be surprising if the fun and heart of Surf's Up convinces lots of kids (and maybe a few adults) to pick up a board.

Peter Clines has had a lifelong love affair with the movies. He grew up in New England, where he studied English literature and education, and now lives and writes somewhere in Southern California. If anyone knows exactly where, he would appreciate a few hints.
