Nobody Wants This is a nuanced exploration of modern romantic relationships, capturing the complexities of love at various stages of adulthood especially when couples belong to different faiths. With its sharp writing and witty characters, the show delves into the nuances of commitment, communication, and the everyday challenges faced by couples, many unseen. As season two entertains audiences, the creative team comes together to discuss what makes the series so popular. They include Kristen Bell (Joanne and Executive Producer), Adam Brody (Rabbi Noah), Justine Lupe (Morgan), Timothy Simons (Sasha), Jackie Tohn (Esther), Erin Foster (Creator, Writer, Executive Producer), Jenni Konner (Co-Showrunner, Writer, Executive Producer), and Bruce Eric Kaplan (Co-Showrunner, Writer, Executive Producer).
The excitement surrounding the second season of Nobody Wants This was palpable. Just two weeks after its premiere, the show was stealing hearts once again, with the news of a third season pickup. How will Noah and Joanne’s relationship unfold? Will Joanne convert to Judaism?
Exploring the Themes of Relationships
Erin Foster, the show’s creator, writer, and executive producer, led the discussion She expressed her eagerness to explore the themes and milestones of the season, noting how important it was to represent realistic, complicated relationships on screen.
“I don’t think it felt fresh in the sense that it was just my take. It was more of a right place, right time. The perspective wasn’t the thing five years ago, but maybe it became the thing when the show came out,” she says. “I got lucky, in a lot of ways, that I was given an opportunity when people wanted it.”
As they progress to focus on the relationship between Noah and Joanne, Erin explains, “The first season, it was very clear with moments like the first kiss, the first ‘I love you,’ or figuring out exclusivity. Those were pivotal milestones.”
“For the second season, we aimed to identify what those milestones look like at the next stage. We know they love each other, but now they have to navigate living together, dating, and the more intricate aspects of being in a relationship.”

Jenni Konner & Bruce Eric Kaplan

Jenni Konner chimes in. “Getting invited to help on the second season of a massive hit is a really good way to do Hollywood. I highly recommend it because you never know what’s going to happen!”
Jenni continues, “Erin is incredibly collaborative and generous, and it’s been a delight joining her. The chemistry has been instantaneous.”
Bruce Eric Kaplan nodded in agreement. “Jenni and I have worked together for about four hundred years, so when we joined this project, we hitt the ground running,” he jokes.
Erin, reflects on the process. “It was scary starting a new season of a show. I didn’t know what it would be like working with new people. Luckily, they brought a tremendous amount of respect to the table. If something was really important to me, they prioritized it, and that meant a lot.”
Everyday Life As A Couple
In this second season, each character’s journey reveals the subtleties of everyday life in a relationship. Kristen articulated the shift beautifully, notes, “I was curious about the tiny moments. Anyone who’s passed the three-month mark in a relationship knows the infinite compromises you have to make.”
She offers her thoughts on the evolution of her character, Joanne. “In Season One, we showcased the undeniable chemistry between Noah and Joanne. Now, we’re diving into a more grounded exploration of how they exist in the real world.”
She continues, “Discussions arise that might seem trivial to outsiders, but they’re incredibly significant. For example, do we ever have a night off? Where do we spend our holidays? And, of course, the practical debates, like sharing a toothbrush! Some people are not into that, and you have to navigate those nuances.”
Adam Brody, sharing the dynamic of the couple portrayed on screen, quickly jumps in. “It’s those very moments that bring authenticity and humor to the show. The reality of relationships is often messy, and portraying that helps viewers connect with Noah and Joanne on a personal level.”
Justine Lupe, contributes by sharing her thoughts about her role as Morgan who also finds love in this season. “The characters are so relatable, and Erin’s writing captures these real-life dialogues and moments beautifully. It gives us a chance to see the messiness and beauty in love, which is both reflective and liberating for the audience.”
Timothy Simons, playing Sasha, brought his perspective into the conversation. “There’s something so intimate about watching them navigate these daily challenges. It feels raw and real, and that’s what makes it captivating. The show doesn’t shy away from discomfort or difficult conversations.” He emphasized the value of honesty in the series, bringing a serious tone to the otherwise lighthearted atmosphere.
Erin was heartened by the passion of her cast. “It’s remarkable to see how you all understand the heartbeat of these characters. That’s what makes the storytelling rich.”

Inside The Writing Process
As the dialogue flowed, Bruce interjected, adding insight into the writers’ room. “Erin’s vision for the show is not only brilliant, but also deeply rooted in real life. The dynamics of the characters evolve naturally in the writers’ room because Erin draws from her personal experiences and observations. That authenticity is what resonates with audiences.”
Kristen agreed wholeheartedly, noting, “What’s popping off the page feels real. It captures dynamics you want to explore. Erin’s writing takes the mundane and flips it into something remarkable.”
The group reflected on the core themes of Season Two. The characters grappled not just with romantic relationships but also with personal growth, maturity, and the challenges of commitment. “I think every character brings a unique perspective,” Jenni observes. “Each person’s lens on love and relationships differs, creating a rich tapestry for storytelling.”
Timothy, supports Jenni’s observation, suggesting that “the show serves as a reminder that relationships are not just made up of big moments but rather the tiny day-to-day interactions that build connection.”
As they delved even deeper into the themes of the show, Justine remarks, “One of the reasons why viewers connect with this show is that we don’t present a glossy version of romance. We showcase the real struggles, the laughter, and the emotions that everyone faces.”
Kristen acknowledged the universality of these experiences. “We’ve all been there — those awkward, hilarious, and sometimes heartbreaking instances that form the fabric of love.”
Adam adds, “That’s what makes this show different — its ability to reflect genuine human experiences, and Erin does a phenomenal job of weaving those moments into the storyline.”
Wrapping Up the Conversation
Erin Foster captured the essence of their conversation succinctly: “At the end of the day, this show is about real people encountering real challenges. It’s a celebration of love, with all its imperfections and nuances, which we’re all too familiar with.”
